Statement of the Montenegrin Orthodox Church on the Occasion of Badnji Day:The Badnjak Is One and Montenegrin
On the occasion of this year’s Badnji Day celebration, we address the faithful and all those who carry Montenegro in their hearts to inform them that, following the responses of the Martinović and Borilović brotherhoods and the conducted discussions with officials of the Cetinje Security Department, and taking into account the complex security situation and the unfortunate events that have affected us over the past two years, the Montenegrin Orthodox Church hereby informs the public that the traditional lighting of the Montenegrin badnjak, which is one and indivisible—just as there is one Montenegrin badnjak and one Montenegrin Orthodox Church in its canonical, spiritual, and historical continuity—will be held in Cetinje on January 6, 2026 (December 24, 2025), in front of the Bishop’s Residence on Gruda, starting at 3:00 p.m., as well as in Kotor, in front of the Church of St. Peter of Cetinje the Wonderworker in the Old Town, starting at 6:30 p.m., while clearly and responsibly emphasizing that the Montenegrin Orthodox Church does not stand behind any unblessed activities taking place in Nikšić, Podgorica, or Cetinje, nor behind political or para-church gatherings that unauthorizedly present themselves in its name, as such actions do not contribute to unity, peace, or the spiritual message of Badnji Day and the Feast of the Nativity of Christ, which for centuries have carried a message of communion, love, and responsibility toward Montenegro and its people.
